Assam is a land of romance, mysticism and natural beauty, and it’s no surprise that it is often the choice of honeymooners who want to combine newly-wedded bliss with a holiday of adventure. From trekking and biking to river cruises, cultural trips and wildlife safaris, experiences in Assam are there for the taking.
The word ‘Assam’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘asom’ meaning ‘peerless’. The state is home to over 180 species of mammals, but for most wildlife lovers, it would throw up images of rhino country. It goes without saying that Kaziranga should be at the top of anyone’s must-do list, but the state also has four other parks, including the Manas National Park. A highlight of these parks would be the Kaziranga Elephant Festival, held at the Kaziranga National Park each February, when hundreds of Asiatic elephants are decorated from head to toe, much like Kerala’s Guruvayoor temple elephants, and participate in races and football matches. Besides festivals and wildlife, adventure sports are a big draw, with mountain biking, hang gliding, boat racing and white-water rafting being the most popular.
