Dimsums, tea, tarts, buns, soups, congee – the variety of food in Hong Kong is mind-boggling and can easily be the only reason for one to travel all the way to the island. That the city also has some of Asia’s finest restaurants only helps the cause.
Hong Kong is a gastronomical delight. With some of the best of street food, tearooms, international cafés and even Indian restaurants, the food here is rich, flavourful and diverse. For an authentic Hong Kong experience, try spending a few hours in a Chinese Tea Room and biting into dim sums.
Known as Dàn Tǎ, the Egg Tarts here are unlike anywhere else. A combination of egg yolk- based creamy custard in the centre of little cups of pastry dough; they are very popular in Hong Kong. The small rounded Egg Waffles, Gai Daan Jai, are also famous. Eaten often by themselves, the waffles are one of the many things that display the influence of the west on the food of Hong Kong. The undisputed kings of Hong Kong’s culinary scene however are dim sums and baos. Soft, delicate and flavourful, they display the culinary prowess of the island.
